Illinois gym membership cancellation laws

Illinois gives 3 business days to cancel for a full refund, counted from the first business day after you sign (7 calendar days if the gym isn't open yet). It also lets you cancel if you move more than 25 miles away with no comparable center, or because of death or disability.

You can cancel within 3 business days after the first business day after you sign ("business day" = any day the facility is open) for a full refund. If the facility hadn't opened yet or you didn't buy at an existing facility, you get 7 calendar days.

In writing, delivered by certified or registered mail to the address in the contract, online at the center's website (if you signed up online), or to the email address given in the contract (if any). Refunds are due within 30 days.

Other reasons you can cancel

Moving awayRelocation farther than 25 miles, when the center can't designate a comparable center within 25 miles of your new home: you can cancel and pay only for time before you show reasonable evidence of the move, plus any fee in the contract capped at 10% of the unused balance or $50, whichever is less. Disability / deathDeath or disability: you or your estate pay only for the time before the death or onset of disability. The center may require reasonable evidence. (815 ILCS 645/6(a)(3))
